Description

Name: Justine Bitterroot
Species: Amaura
Type: Fire/Flying
Gender: Female
Age: 24
Class: Priest of Trygve
Height: 5'7"
Ability: Healer
Attacks:
:iconbugtypeplz: Struggle Bug: Darts of bright yellowish-green energy in the vague shape of flying insects launch from Justine's hand or staff, biting into one or more opponents and lowering their ability to concentrate.
:icondarktypeplz: Quash: A wave of dark energy emanates from Justine and forces a target back, not harming them but hindering their ability to act.
:iconghosttypeplz: Lick: Justine projects a bolt of sickly black-purple energy to attack an opponent, withering their flesh and possibly causing paralysis.
:iconfightingtypeplz: Low Sweep: Justine strikes out at an opponent's legs with her staff, knocking them off-balance and hurting them with their own weight and size.

Personality: For a priestess of the god of vengeance, Justine is surprisingly calm and level-headed. She approaches her duties with a cool, logical approach, favoring planning over rash action; this can make her seem rather ruthless in the service of her deity, but revenge is a dish best served cold, after all. While she can be ruthless, she's almost never cruel -- causing suffering may be necessary, even righteous, but she doesn't enjoy it. Justine's faith is based off of a deep belief that the pursuit of vengeance brings justice and order to the world, and she doesn't like to act in ways that may contradict that belief. Justine cares about people, in a quiet way, even if the mechanisms of her caring are sometimes very odd.

Secretly, and somewhat unconsciously, Justine is questioning herself, her faith, and her destiny. She's got a bad case of wanderlust and an acute curiosity about the world beyond her home village, and she half-wonders if exploring it will lead her away from the beliefs of her childhood. Her devotion to Trygve is true, and she doesn't want to betray it... but sometimes she wonders if there's something more to life than holding grudges and settling scores.

History:
Justine Bitterroot was born in Burnt Grove Village, a small and insular community on the Magma River, just north of the Abandoned Battleground. Burnt Grove was settled by refugees from the destruction of Ethus City, and in the decades since the Ethus-Ormona war, the villagers neither forgave nor forgot; a fair number of Burnt Grove citizens were ghostly victims of the war, and even the living villagers had long memories and powerful resentments. It was no surprise that the primary faith of Burnt Grove Village was the worship of Trygve, the god of revenge.

Not only was Justine born into this village of old grudges, she was born to its leaders: Silas Bitterroot, a Ghost-type Avalugg and the Mayor of Burnt Grove, and his wife Osanne, a Dark/Electric-type Aurorus who served the local temple of Trygve as high priestess. There was never any question that Justine would follow her mother into the priesthood, and as soon as she was capable of behaving herself in the temple, she began to learn the sacraments of Trygve: to remember all insults forever and to find your vengeance, whatever it took. It was a strange message for a fairly happy young girl to take in, but life in Burnt Grove was usually that sort of strange: pleasant enough from day to day, but always possessing an odd aura of resentment and hurt, sometimes flaring into massive arguments or even fights in the street when one villager pushed another too far. Justine's mother explained to her one day that it was only the village's faith in Trygve that held them together; vengeance for Ethus City was an impossible dream, but through devotion Trygve might grant them that miracle.

Justine was a diligent student, serving her family and village as best she could, but privately she began to wonder what the rest of the world was like. Was everywhere this way, living with the burden of its own history, or was life different somewhere else? What was this Ormona City like, anyway? Finally, several years after she came of age, Justine convinced her parents to allow her to travel -- to learn about the world, to scout Ormona, and to help other travelers find justice and vengeance for their own troubles. She began her wandering only a few months ago, with little more to her name than her satchel, her staff, and her familiar Mathilde, her lifelong companion. Her holy mission, as she sees it, is to find and aid those in need of righteous revenge... but out in the wider world, in a world not built on grudges, she's not sure if she'll maintain her devotion to Trygve or find some other path for her life.

Familiar's Name: Mathilde
Familiar's Personality: Despite being objectively the same age as Justine, Mathilde is still rather young and playful. She loves to explore, especially aerially, and sometimes Justine has a hard time keeping up with her... but other times, Mathilde's insistence that Justine take time out of her day to play and relax keeps Justine sane. Mathilde is also more openly friendly and caring than Justine, doing her best to take care of both her regular companion and any friends the pair of them might make.
Notes / Extra / Etc:

:bulletred: Like most clerics, Justine tends towards more of a supporting role in combat. Her Healer ability means that she can help cure her allies' infirmities without conscious effort, so she tries to stay as close as is safe to them, focusing on disabling their opponents with her various debilitating moves. If she's forced to fight on her own, though, she'll do so as bravely as she can.

:bulletred: Justine is particularly proud of knowing Struggle Bug, which she mentally refers to as the Wrathful Swarm of Trygve.

:bulletred: Justine's father is close to 120 years old, and her mother is his fourth wife, so Justine has a fair number of older half-siblings, most of whom she's never met. (Some are older than her mother, and some are dead.) Her only full sibling is her younger brother Absalom, a 17-year-old Electric-type Bergmite currently training to become part of the village's guard patrol. Justine worries a bit about him, but truthfully, the two have never been close.

:bulletred: Thanks to their Flying type, Justine and Mathilde are lighter than their size would suggest, and their sail-wings can easily carry them for flight. Mathilde is a very adept flier, while Justine is somewhat less so, not having had many opportunities to practice.

:bulletred: The red gems on Mathilde's sides and Justine's hands give off a gentle heat under normal circumstances. They cool and darken when using non-physical attacks, and if/when Justine or Mathilde learn and use a Fire-type attack, the gems will blaze brilliantly -- they're latent Fire-type energy generators.
